RBC Newspaper Redesign

RBC, a daily independent business newspaper, has been in print since 2006. In this time, reader habits have changed radically, and the newspaper has had to change in response. Monotonous long-reads have given way to short and diverse materials with more photos, infographics and negative space.

This project won a Silver at the Art Directors Club Russia in 2019.

One of the key innovations is a dynamic front page without the traditional massive blocks of text. The new design features both poster-style and typography-heavy front pages. The classic newspaper front page with large photographs remains available for use if it’s the best way to illustrate a given material.

One of the redesign’s goals was to create a clear, easy-to-use system of formats. Each kind of material (column, Q&A, scripts, interviews, profiles, and photo essays) has its own unique visual style.

The outcome of the project involved crafting over 200 templates for newspaper spreads featuring different content. This empowered RBC’s in-house designers to create a range of eye-catching designs within tight deadlines.
