Golden Mask Award and Festival

The Golden Mask is a Russian theatre festival and the National Theatre Award established in 1994. It’s Russia’s main theater event of the year. During this much anticipated festival, the most timely, significant, and outstanding performances are staged by the country’s best theater troupes as they vie for the coveted prize all over Russia. All theatrical genres are covered, from drama, opera, and ballet, to puppet theater, operetta, and modern dance.



The festival has a long history. Every year, the Golden Mask experiments with brand identity, but the logo (more like an emblem) of the festival remains unchanged. This emblem suggested the main visual metaphor for the identity in 2021. I noticed the crystals adorning the Golden Mask. In the shimmering facets, I saw the light of spotlights above a dark stage and the pattern of the iconic theatrical character—Harlequin.

The festival takes place in dozens of cities across Russia, and annually attracts up to a hundred thousand spectators.
